It started informally when the community rallied to support families left without income due to the pandemic closures. The purchase of one loaf of bread has lead to a weekly senior luncheon and the establishment of a community Foodbank.
Senior Lunch
The Olón Senior Lunch program, begun during the Pandemic closures, now in its fourth year, continues to provide a weekly hot lunch to the most vulnerable of seniors. With over 15,000 meals served, the program is
so successful that it has been replicated by similar volunteer groups in two neighboring communities.
Foodbank
Begun at the request of the Comuna Leadership after witnessing the work of the Spirit of Wellness Team during the Pandemic, the community Foodbank, now in its third year of operation, has distributed over 30,000
pounds of food during the bi-monthly distributions.
In addition, support from the volunteers, donors and community has resulted in the Foodbank beneficiaries receiving vegetable seeds to begin home gardens, medical assistance and mobility devices, clothing and
household items and school supplies and bookbags.
In addition, the Foodbank sponsors an annual holiday event to remind every member of the Foodbank family that they are valued and cherished.
According to the latest data from the World Food Program (WFP):
2.9 MILLION PEOPLE IN ECUADOR FACE FOOD INSECURITY.
1.3 MILLION PEOPLE IN ECUADOR FACE SEVERE FOOD INSECURITY.
23% OF 5-YEAR OLD ECUADORIANS SUFFER FROM MALNUTRITION.
With the support of the Olón Comuna, Spirit of Wellness operates a community Foodbank providing food staples, local produce and hygiene supplies to families suffering from food insecurity.
The Foodbank currently serves 35 families and an additional 30 individuals with food distributions every other week.
Spirit of Wellness proudly contributes to the efforts of the residents of Olón who serve a free weekly senior lunch to the elders of the community.
The lunch provides a hot meal as well as a take-home meal to those most vulnerable to hunger and poor nutrition.
In October 2022, the lunch service celebrated its 10,000 meal!
Spirit of Wellness partnered with community leaders to provide food staples to families left without income due to the pandemic closures.
